Family Selection Criteria
1. Need for adequate shelter:
- The family's current shelter has problems with the structure, roof, floor, heating system, water supply, electricity, bathroom or kitchen.
- The family's current shelter has an inadequate number of bedrooms as determined by the number of family members, ages and sex of household members.
- The family's current neighborhood is unsafe or unsanitary.
2. Ability to pay for a Habitat House:
- The family must have a minimum household gross income of $20,000 to $40,000 annually. Some exceptions may apply.
- A family selected for a Habitat Home must pay a cash down payment of $1,200. The full amount must be paid at least a month before taking occupancy of their home.
- The family must provide a credit report. (A form will be provided for this at the time of application.)
3. Willingness to Partner with Habitat:
An applicant must be willing to enter into a partnership with Habitat by:
- Completing between 350 - 500 hours of sweat equity on their house and other Habitat projects.
- Participating in Habitat's nurture program which may include financial counseling, household management education, Homeowners Association meetings and other Habitat activities.
